Lift Engineers for Bolton
Bolton has a lot of apartment buildings, many of them in converted mills, alongside offices, shops and public buildings. We maintain and repair lifts across the town, and Bolton is a straight run down the A666 from our base in Darwen.
We work on all the major makes and models, new and old.

Apartment Blocks and the Building Safety Act
Under the Building Safety Act 2022, residential buildings at least 18 metres tall or with seven or more storeys, and at least two homes, are higher-risk buildings. The accountable person must keep up-to-date safety information about the building, and lifts are part of that. We provide clear maintenance records, defect reports and lift information to help you meet those duties.
Firefighting and Evacuation Lifts
Taller residential buildings often have a firefighting lift, built to BS EN 81-72, which the fire service relies on in an emergency. These lifts need their firefighter controls and switching tested as part of maintenance. We’ll make sure the extra checks are included in your contract.
Mill Conversions
Many of Bolton’s mills are now flats, with lifts fitted into the original structure. Tight shafts, awkward machine rooms and limited access for parts are common. We plan the work properly before arriving so the lift is out of service for as little time as possible.
Servicing and LOLER
We set service frequencies from the manufacturer’s instructions and how much the lift is used. Lifts carrying people need a LOLER thorough examination at least every six months, normally by your insurer. We’ll carry out the remedial work the report calls for, within the timescale it sets.
Breakdowns
Most breakdowns come down to doors, followed by levelling faults and controller problems. When you call, we’ll give you an honest arrival time and tell you if parts need ordering.
Accessible Entrances
Pubs, shops and older buildings often have steps at the entrance that keep wheelchair users out. In Manchester we fitted a Flexstep at The Eagle, a staircase that turns into a wheelchair lift when it’s needed (see the case study). The same approach works in plenty of Bolton buildings.

Frequently Asked questions
What's the difference between a firefighting lift and an evacuation lift?
A firefighting lift, built to BS EN 81-72, is for the fire service to use during a fire. An evacuation lift, built to BS EN 81-76, is for getting people out of the building under a managed evacuation plan.
What is the golden thread?
Under the Building Safety Act, the golden thread is the accurate, up-to-date information about a higher-risk building that the accountable person must keep. Lift records, drawings and maintenance information form part of it.
Can an old lift in a converted mill be brought up to current standards?
Usually in stages. A survey against current safety guidance shows which improvements matter most, and these can be done over time or as part of a wider modernisation.
How should we tell residents about lift works?
Give as much notice as possible, put up clear notices and contact residents who may struggle with the stairs directly, so arrangements can be made for them.
What is a PEEP?
A personal emergency evacuation plan sets out how a person who can’t use the stairs will get out of the building in an emergency. Lifts can form part of the plan where a suitable evacuation lift is available.
Do lift landing doors need to be fire-rated?
Yes. Landing doors form part of the fire separation between floors and are tested to BS EN 81-58. Damaged or altered doors should be repaired with approved parts so they keep their rating.
Who should hold the keys to the lift motor room?
Only people who need access and are competent to be there, such as your lift contractor and authorised building staff. The room should always be kept locked.
Can the lift shaft be used for cables or pipes?
No. The lift shaft should only contain equipment that belongs to the lift. Other services running through it create fire and safety risks.
