Home Lifts for Southport Homes
Southport is full of houses that weren’t designed with lifts in mind: Victorian villas, converted flats, and bungalows with rooms in the roof. That doesn’t mean a lift can’t go in. It just means the survey matters.
We supply and install home lifts across Southport and the rest of Sefton, and we’ll tell you plainly what will and won’t work in your property.
Thinking about a lift for your home in Southport? We’ll come out, measure up and tell you honestly what will fit. Call 01254 775187 or book a home survey.
Victorian Villas in Birkdale and Hesketh Park
The large Victorian houses in Birkdale, Hesketh Park and around Lord Street have big rooms, high ceilings and grand staircases. There’s usually space for a lift, and often more than one good position. Much of this area is in a conservation area, but a lift fitted inside the house rarely needs planning permission unless the building is listed. We’ll check before any work is quoted.
Flats in Converted Houses
Many of Southport’s bigger houses are now split into flats. If you own a leasehold flat, you’ll normally need your freeholder’s written consent before cutting through a floor or altering the structure, even inside your own flat. A lift between floors of a duplex flat is quite possible, but it’s worth checking your lease early so the approval doesn’t hold things up later.
Home Lift Options
Home lifts range from slim one-person models to wheelchair lifts with room for a carer. On sandy ground, low-pit and no-pit models are usually the first choice. We’ll talk you through what suits your house and how you’ll use it.
Sandy Ground and Lift Pits
Southport sits on sand, and in many parts of the town the water table isn’t far below the floor. Digging a pit for a lift here can mean tanking and pumping, which adds cost and time. Most home lifts we fit need only a shallow recess or no pit at all. Where a pit is unavoidable, we’ll say so at the survey and explain what’s involved.
Bungalows in Ainsdale and Churchtown
Ainsdale, Churchtown and the outskirts of the town have plenty of bungalows with bedrooms added in the roof. A lift can make the upstairs usable again, but headroom under a sloping roof is the deciding factor. We’ll measure exactly where there’s enough height to step out of the lift, and position it around that.
Choosing a Lift for the Long Term
If you’re planning to stay in your home, it’s worth thinking about the years ahead as well as now. A lift that takes a wheelchair costs more than a one-person model, but it means you won’t need to replace it if your mobility changes. We’ll talk through both options at the survey, with prices for each, so you can decide what makes sense for you.
Disabled Facilities Grants in Sefton
In Southport, Disabled Facilities Grants are run by Sefton Council. It starts with an occupational therapy assessment through the council’s Health and Social Care team, and Sefton Home Improvements Service may then help with the application. The mandatory grant is capped at £30,000, including fees. Any work started before written approval won’t be funded, so wait for the go-ahead before booking an installation.

Frequently Asked questions
Can children use a home lift?
With supervision, yes. Hold-to-run controls and safety edges protect against most accidents, and a key switch can stop children using it on their own.
Can a home lift carry a carer as well as a wheelchair user?
Yes, if you choose a model with a large enough car. We’ll measure the wheelchair and talk through how the lift will be used before recommending a size.
Can you fit a lift in an upside-down house?
Yes. Where the living room and kitchen are upstairs, a lift makes the main living space reachable without the stairs every time you come in.
Can a home lift be moved if we move house?
Sometimes. Some models can be dismantled and refitted, but it depends on the new house and the age of the lift. In most cases, it’s simpler to leave it as a selling point.
Do you take away the old stairlift?
Yes. If a home lift is replacing a stairlift, we can remove the old one when we install the new lift.
