Modifications to existing loading bay lift following safety observations
TJ Lift Solutions were instructed to attend the Aldi store in Bootle following safety concerns raised during an insurance inspection by Allianz. The key requirement was to improve lift safety and establish a compliant, practical rescue solution for site personnel.
A more critical issue was identified with the lift’s design. The system did not include an emergency lowering function, making safe passenger rescue difficult in the event of a breakdown. Additional concerns included restricted access to manual gate release buttons, lack of wall-mounted controls, and unsafe or impractical door access during entrapment scenarios.
Overall, a solution was required that would enable safe passenger rescue, improve accessibility of emergency controls, minimise manual intervention, and work within the limitations of the existing lift system.
TJ Lift Solutions designed and implemented a bespoke upgrade to enhance both the safety and usability of the lift system.
This included the installation of supplementary lift controls positioned adjacent to the existing control panel, along with dedicated wall-mounted control stations to improve accessibility. A remote door release function was integrated, allowing authorised personnel to safely unlock lift doors without the need for direct mechanical intervention.
The system was carefully designed to provide a controlled rescue solution, enabling trapped passengers to be assisted safely without requiring the lift to be moved. This approach ensured that both maintenance tasks and emergency situations could be managed effectively and safely within the constraints of the original lift design.
The completed works have significantly improved the safety, usability, and overall condition of the lift system at the Aldi store in Bootle.
A safe and practical rescue procedure is now in place, aligning with insurer recommendations and improving overall compliance. The accessibility of lift controls has been greatly enhanced, reducing the risk to staff and contractors during emergency situations.
In addition, the initial housekeeping issues were resolved, resulting in a cleaner and safer environment for both users and maintenance personnel.
