Most people who ring us about a home lift aren’t planning anything grand. Usually the stairs have become a problem, for them or for someone they live with. They want to stay in the house they know rather than move to a bungalow, or rather than turn the front room into a bedroom.
We supply and fit home lifts across Manchester and Greater Manchester. Every job starts with a visit to the house. We can’t tell you which lift will work until we’ve seen where it would go, what’s above and below that spot, and who will be using it.
Manchester Homes and Where a Lift Can Go
Manchester’s housing is very mixed, and that affects which lift makes sense.
In the Victorian and Edwardian terraces of Levenshulme, Chorlton, Rusholme and Fallowfield, space is usually tight. The narrow hallways and steep stairs are often the reason people want a lift in the first place. A compact lift that goes up through the floor from a living room into a bedroom above often works better than trying to fit something into the hall.
The larger semis and villas in Didsbury, Whalley Range, Sale and Heaton Moor usually have more room to play with. That can open up options such as a lift serving three floors, or a larger car for a wheelchair.
The 1930s semis around Stockport, Urmston and Prestwich tend to follow a similar layout. We often find a sensible spot for a lift in these houses without major changes elsewhere.
With new-builds and self-builds, the best time to talk to us is before the plans are signed off. Allowing for a lift at design stage is far cheaper than adding one later.
Fitting a Lift into an Existing House
You don’t need to have planned for a lift when the house was built. Most of the lifts we fit go into homes that have been lived in for years.
What matters is finding a route between floors that works at both ends. On the ground floor, the lift needs to be somewhere you can get to easily. Upstairs, it has to arrive somewhere useful, not in the middle of a bedroom you can no longer use. Some lifts need a shallow pit and some don’t. Some need more building work than others. We’ll go through what your house would need at the survey, so there are no surprises when the quote arrives.

Home Lifts for Wheelchair Access
If the lift is for a wheelchair user, we start with the person, not the floor plan. We look at the size of the chair, whether someone will travel with them, and how they’ll get in and out on each floor. The turning space outside the lift matters as much as the lift itself. A lift that fits the house but leaves a wheelchair user stuck at the door upstairs isn’t the right lift.

The first visit is about understanding the house as much as choosing the lift. We’ll look at where you want to travel between floors, the space available at each level and how the lift will be used.
We’ll also look at practical issues such as getting equipment into the property and any alterations that may be needed around the proposed position.
Once we’ve established what will work, we can discuss the suitable lift options and prepare a quotation based on the proposed installation. You’ll know what is involved before deciding whether to go ahead.
Once the lift and specification are agreed, the installation can be planned around the property and any other work that needs to take place.
